Last minute touches

Matt and Carson are out installing the sign this morning. Alex and I are finishing the install for tonight's opening at WaterSpace South in Slaton. We are introducing the town to the work of Scott Oliver, the artist we commissioned for WaterSpace Plaza. As well as documentation, we are presenting his proposal for the plaza.
We are also introducing EbM to the town with a smattering of member's works and documentation from previous installs.

We arrived in Slaton, TX about an hour ago. We're staying at this amazing gallery/studio, WaterSpace. We're laying out A World Building Primer, the EbM traveling show.

For this presentation we're dedicating one window to the work of the artist commissioned for Slaton, Scott Oliver.
The other window is EbM documentation.
Behling that window are a handful of works by the members of EbM.

My cup runneth over

At least that is what I like to think. When it comes to cups we've got one member whose is full of poison. I balance her out with a cup that runneth over with ambrosia. Together, I suppose, we are a half full cup sitting on a table, awaiting interpretation.

I'll leave that to you.

The bad news, I spoke with the leaseholder in Plainvew, Texas today, and we will not be installing Carla Duarte's piece there this year. We are postponed until 2012, at the earliest.
Fires are ravaging the area. Fireworks displays for July 4 have been canceled in all the surrounding communities. Two farms adjacent to our install have already burned. The risk of flash fire while we are out in October is far too high. (And here's a worrying fire near the community of Whiteface. This one is just North of our Bledsoe site, I think...)

We will focus on Scott Oliver's piece in Slaton, Texas this October. And we will spend extra time working in Bledsoe, Texas. Perhaps a fully cleared road and walking path from Farm Road 769 are in the offing. Along with a beautiful fence. We'll see.
The good news, we met with Scott and his pieces are coming along beautifully. We are insanely excited about his project in WaterSpace Plaza.

The other good news is that we are pursuing sites in Oaxaca, Mexico; Hjortdal, Denmark; and Bildudalur, Iceland in 02013. We have confirmed a site and install in Chania, Greece with the artist Christy Matson that year. Now we are moving forward with these additional international sites for 02013. I have begun initial research on Greenland contacts, to try and find an iceberg soon to calve. We hope to commission SF artist for this dream.
We will be in Oaxaca for a residency next year, looking for the right parcel of land.

Finally, a reminder to everyone, our two sites in New Mexico for next year, are in conjunction with ISEA2012, and have an open call!

Bookwheel in progress

 

Jon Whitfill's making spectacular progress on his bookwheel for Evanston. IL. Here are the first pics of the wheel coming together. This is half of a sculpture diptych that Jon is installing with us in the second week of July. The second sculpture is built around the pages removed from these books. We're completely chuffed to see this work coming together so quickly. The bookwheel is being installed on a piece of property leased to EbM by Stel and Angela Valavanis. The companion piece will be installed on the deck at their business, Creative Coworking.

July in Evanston should be quite the celebration for EbM. Jon will be in town for one week. He's bringing his wife and three kids. EbM will have at least three of our five members on hand. As well, as his two sculptures, it looks like Jon will be bringing his collaborative project, The RJP Nomadic Gallery, as well. The R and P (Ryder and Piotrs) of the title may be on hand with their families. We'll all (11+ people) be camping out at Stel and Angela's house.
EbM will also be bringing work by our individual members to share at a show in Creative Coworking. And somewhere in Evanston The Portable Morgellon will be installed to share films and videos by the 23E Studios family of artists.
So it's a big traveling Art Carnival. We hope to bring just as much energy and work to Slaton and Plainview in September, 2011, when we are in Texas with Carla Duarte and Scott Oliver.

Three new commissions

Scott Oliver, Carla Duarte (both pictured above) and Christy Matson are the latest artists commissioned by Earthbound Moon.
Scott will be installing a work in Slaton, Texas, outside the WaterSpace Gallery. Carla will be installing a work on a ranch outside Plainview, Texas. Both installs are scheduled for late September. And should be accompanied by a carnival of events.
Christy will be installing a work in Chania, Greece in 2013.

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome these incredible artists to the project.

Last week, Scott, Carla, and I were in Texas visiting the sites, and meeting the wonderful arts community there. Below you can see Scott and Carla enjoying the plaza where he will be working in September. EbM friend and landscape architect Matt Weaver will be assisting with the project.

Evanston, Slaton, and Plainview are the full slate of 2011 installations. For 2012, EbM is planning two installs near Albuquerque, NM, and one near Moffat, CO, on lands we own. We are looking for a property in Detroit, MI. And negotiating a lease in Baja California, Mexico. We have a few other surprises in the can for 2012, but can't reveal them just yet.
