Apparitions in Moriarty

In October, EbM has the pleasure of working with artist Travis Somerville from Oakland, California, to install his new work, Rainbow Warriors.

Somerville's project will a permanent installation on our site in Moriarty, New Mexico, that will use light and the surrounding atmosphere to create high desert apparitions at night.  The self-contained solar powered project will project a rainbow light upward from the earth, appearing and disappearing as dust, rain, snow and other particulate matter flow through the air.  While not only responding to the physical environment, the installation makes reference to a Native American legend of the Warriors of the Rainbow that Somerville states, "are promised to restore purity to the Earth and justice to Mankind, ending the current state of environmental destruction."



In the video above, Somerville talks about his practice and the project he will be creating with the assistance of lighting engineer, Dan Dodt.  The video is part of Somerville's Kickstarter campaign to raise the needed funds to complete the project.  Please consider donating to make this project happen.  The full Rainbow Warriors kickstarter page can be found here:

I was there at the pop-up drive-in outside Moriarty, NM, USA, and there was no way to avoid contemplating the beauty of this film.

Here we have a test run, the arctic sunset at sunset. The screen has not iced over yet, it is just shiny copper.

OMG! Brilliant barely describes it.
In the cooling desert outside Moriarty; in a field grazed by horses and cows; on a landscape riven with rattlesnakes, ants, beetles, and cacti, a copper screen chilled to freezing was coated in milk, taking on the appearance of an ice floe floating in the sky. Upon its surface flickered the sublime images of Jessica Segall in the arctic. Beautiful.

Seven four legged art appreciators visited the site today. They were very excited about installation, so excited they could hardly keep themselves from eating it! (Which they did). The little ones name is "Itchy Zuzax"

Last night we had a fabulous visit with Erin and Nancy of PLAND, a New Mexico residency and art experiment. They are fabulous. And PLAND is ridiculously inspiring.

A busy day today. We're documenting the Los Lunas site, visiting the Valencia county records office to gather info on the site, visiting the Torrance county records office for info on the Moriarty site, visiting the Moriarty site again, and visiting our neighbors out there: the Rockin' RC ranch and Club 203. Diverse.
Then this evening we're dining with the directors of ISEA2012.
Could we be luckier?
